HOPE BACK FROM EUROPE:GIG HIGHLIGHTS W/ JAMES BROWN & SHAGGY

Well, I'm back from my first trip to Europe and I had a great time. Thanks to everyone who helped me along the way. I will attempt to remember the highlights of my trip and include any websites or info on artists I encountered along the way with some more highlights to come. I had a chance to perform with many exciting artists of all sorts
Nov 4-11: Den Haag and Amsterdam: I played in a couple of salsa and funk jams while I was in town mostly at a small bar called the Pater and a great jam at De Bordelaise.
While I was in Den Haag, I had a chance to record with members of James Brown's band as a guest on Holland funk band, Octave Pussy. What a great name!! Fred Thomas, bass player for JB for over 30 years, came up with the theme of my trip with his song 'Keep Da Funk Alive'.Thanks to Frank from the De Bordelaise for the amazing hook up. Please checkout his website at www.liveatthedebordelaise.com for info on his great live dvds, including my sitin with Winston and Fiends 11/11/04. There will soon be sample video available as soon as I figure out how to make it stream. Soon come.
,
So, Antwerpen Belgium was a truly great moment in my life y'all. I was invited to by James Brown's Soul Generals (specifically Jeff Watkins/sax, Keith on guitar and Fred on bass...I'm bad with last names) whom I recorded with the night before in Holland. Well, they were playing a all star psycho full orchestra/choir MTV Euro techno outerspace show called Night of The Proms/
It was a surreal adventure. Some of the other artists on the show included Joe Crocker, Shaggy, John Miles and of course JAMES BROWN. James looked great but played only four tunes, starting with Living in America. But it was still a great thing to witness. I got to even shake hands on his way out. Ohhh....anyways. This night was the night before the last night and there was a wrap party at the Astrid Park Hotel in downtown Antwerpen. Keith and Jeff let me hang at the party with them but I was soon on the stage with the house band. There was a nice size horn section and I jumped in with my alto and flute. Shaggy then grabbed the mic and we did a great Bob Marldey esque jam. I took a short flute solo with some dancehall remix dirty south style you know. After this, we did an intro to Sex Machine and I notced that JB entourage was shuffling about. Right about the beginning of the vocals, I noticed James sitting a table close to my side of the stage wearing a great purple suit with his wfie at his side. So, he eventuall came up to my side of the stage and waved to the crowd. I don't remember if he really sang anything except for the chorus. But we soon came up to the sax solo and he pointed to me and lowered his vocal mic right into the bell of my sax. It was magical and I looked right into his eyes for most of the solo just so that I would not miss a second of this moment. I played a decent solo and he gave me a cool head nod and then went on to jam a little on piano. I had to take a second to compose myself and let the rest of the horn section do their thang. It was great time and I shook James hand once more and said goodnight to him. He hung out a little bit longer and seemed to really enjoy himself. My friends in Holland will soon hook me up with some secret photos that hopefully will capture some good moments. So, I will update the second half of my trip in Europe a little bit later and I will try to scan in some great photos, especially in Barcelona.
w
I also went to Amsterdam a couple of times and sat in with Hans Dulfer at Cafe Alto. Hans is Candy Dulfer's father and a great showman/tenor player. I also played a great samba jam on a beach on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

HOPE IN EUROPE NOV 4-24, 2004 (AMSTERDAM AND BEYOND)

Hello from Amsterdam/Den Haag!!! This is my first time in Europe and so far so good. I'm chilling in The Hague (Den Haag) in Holland right now. It's rainy, so I'm getting lots of 'coffee' shop time, but I´m still riding my bike everywhere. I arrived Thurs Nov 4 straight from my Colorado journey (see below) in Amsterdam. I've been mostly hanging with some great people in Den Haag and have been doing jazz/latin/funk/ jams at 'Pater'night club in center of Den Haag. So, I'll be in Europe until Nov 24. If you're around, let me know and I'll come and visit. Press contact for my e-mail address.
I'll be in playing at a funk jam on Sun Nov 7 at ´Pater´, and also I´m going to Cafe Alto on Wed Nov 10 to check out legendary tenor sax man Hans Dulfer (Candy Dulfer's father). I plan to go to Brussels, Paris, and Barcelona before I leave. I appreciate any advice on anything (clubs, food, etc.)

COLORADO MOUNTAIN HIGH 0CT 2004

Well, Colorado was a blast and I thank all of the kind folks for the hospitality. The Mtn Sun show (Thurs Oct 7) was off da chain, da bomb, and all dat!!! Words can´t express my gratitude to Mtn Sun and George Porter, Anders Osbourne, Kyle Hollingsworth SCI, and Zach from STS9 for the amazing jam. Some highlights of the night were 'Take the Power Back'by Rage against the Machine, all of Anders songs and solos were great, and the great beer everywhere. So, hopefully I'll see y'all next year.

Some of the other Colorado shows I played...
Sun Oct 3 Mtn Sun :
GRANDPA MOJO(www.grandpamojo.com).
live trip hop with great trance beats and sublime trumpet/sample man, Chris Hansen(ala late electric Miles)
We played in Boulder at Mtn Sun and Rhumba (my favorite Boulder bar) We did a live broadcast on a pirate station that has to keep on the move (literally) to avoid the FCC cops

SAMBA DENDE(www.sambadende.com)
local traditional samba band with members of Motet and Caberet Diosa on percussion
Mojitos all around. There is a strong and sexy Brazilian community in Boulder and the ladies shake their thang at the Sunday Brunch at Rhumba. I played flute and sax with them a couple of times.

ONDA(www.ondalive.com)
latin jazz/salsa...this band reminded me of Los Platanos (latin side project of DBB). Horns, bad ass percussion, and great lead singer. They played lots of great Tito, Cachao, and Mongo Santamaria tunes. I played flute with them on a couple of gigs at Rhumba and Round Midnight in Boulder.

FUTURE JAZZ PROJECT/DRAGONFLY(www.futurejazzproject.com)
2 Denver neo-soul groove bands that share almost the same members. There's a new souljazz scene starting up in Denver, and local drummer Damien Hines is the man on the scene. He would call me for gigs almost everynight 20 minutes before the downbeat (Denver is 45 minute from my spot in Boulder). The lead singer Dede is smoking and Aaron on guitar (from Zilla), Greg Harris on keys/vibes, and Casey on bass are tight. Pause (sp) the MC was nice too. Jans from the Motet also sings with them time to time. They play every Thurs at Dazzle in downtown Denver.

THE LOST VIRGINIAN'S...I played some funky double sax (alto and soprano) with newcomer, Eric Turner, on the Pearl St. Mall in Boulder on sunny afternoons. Eric is a percussion friend from Charlottesville, VA. Eric used to see me when I was in Baaba Seth, and he was in high school. We never hung out in C-ville, but we had a great time catching up in Boulder. Eric is great photographer also. I'll post some of his photos soon.
I loved the great advice we'd get from the local 'residents'of the mall.

HAIRY APES BMX/SKERIK...I sat with Mike Dillon's band, Hairy Apes BMX at Triology in Boulder. Mike plays percussion for Karl Denson and Garage Tois. Bad ass sax man Skerik opened the show with Mike as a duo. The band then ripped it up and then I joined them on saxand did some sick trading with Skerik. Mike Dillon was stage diving and getting everyone to mosh it up. Shit was great!!

So, I'm definitely coming back sooner than later to Colorado. There are some other shows I did but forgot the details (you know how it is in Colorado). SPECIAL THANKS TO BILL AND AIMEE WELCH-KUNTZ AND TIM AND KEVIN FROM MTN SUN.

in early Sep Hope filmed a Belgian reality show that's tentatively titled 'Wedding Bells in the USA' where soon be to be married couples tour around the USA doing different tasks to hopefully win a free Las Vegas wedding. Anyways, the show is watched by 1 million people in a country with only 5 million residents!!! Look out for clips on this site soon

Hope is also briefly featured with FreeWorld on 'Bobby Flay's cooking show' on the Food Network. The show featured the ribs from Memphis and filmed mostly at Blues City Cafe, where Hope plays every Sunday night.

Hope also performed on Memphis station Ch 3 (CBS) on their 'Live from the Peabody' program with FreeWorld.
The show was in partly in honor of Herman Green, local Memphis legend, who will have his own 'note' place on Beale St, an honor reserved for legends like B.B. King. Clips will soon be available.

NEW ORLEANS JAZZFEST 2004 REVIEW (Apr 29-May 1, 2004)

Sun goes down on the racegrounds...the fun continues
Alright, I made it back from the New Orleans Jazz Fest in one piece. It was a magical time as usual. I made it down on Fri Apr 29 just in time to catch my friend Corey Harris at his performance at the blues tent. To my surprise, he allowed me to get up and sit in on a couple of tunes from his Mali influenced segment of the show. It was incredible to finally play at the actual fairgrounds to such a receptive crowd. That night I got to checkout Ozomatli at the Howlin' Wolf. Saturday at the Fest featured Lenny Kravitz, Branford Marsalis, Macy Gray, and Pancho Sanchez, so it was a great day. That night I caught Buckethead opening for Galactic and then I sat in on sax at the end of the Galactic set, which had the coolest drum solo with Stanton, Joe Russo, and a couple of other guys tag teaming the drums. After Galactic, I made it down to North Mississippi Allstar show at Tipitina's Uptown
North Miss with Stanton on drums, Chris Robinson vocals

They had Stanton Moore, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Chris Robinson from Black Crowes sit in. I sat in on sax on "Love Light" on the encore at 7 am, so it was pretty surreal. Sunday night was mellow and I only made it out to see Anders Osbourne at Rock and Bowl bar and Theresa Anderson sat in. So, it was a perfect end to my short Jazzfest weekend. I hope to see y'all next year.

BACK FROM DA MOON-WHAT 2 DO 4 SPRING? 3/23/04

So, it's been a while since the last update...still recovering from the Jam Cruise. Well, Hope is still kiciking it up in Memphis playing with FreeWorld and Master Blaster. Checkout the dates for the latest. There are tentative plans coming up for some New Orleans Jazzfest grooving, but there's some tough competition this year. Memphis hosts a very cool music festival itself called 'Memphis in May' during the weekend of Fri Apr 30-Sun May 2 with all sorts of mega rockstars and other cool acts, like Chaka Khan, Foo Fighters, and others.

Then there's PRINCE TOUR!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy shit. Those who know Hope know her obsession with the little man in heels and she will be definitely be going especially since it may be his last tour for a while...anyone wanna carpool?
So, anyways, what 2 do 4 spring? Let's go crazy!!!

BOOTY BATTALION ROCKIN' AT STEPPIN' OUT

Well, we had a blast at Blacksburg, VA's Steppin' Out festival this year. It all seemed to go by so quickly. The band was joined by Kris Hodges (Floyd Fest organizer) on drums. Highlights of the day were performances by two amazing ensembles from Ghana, The African Show Boys and The Kusun ensemble among others from the day's amazing lineup.
The Booty Battalion had the pleasure of being joined by master drummer, Abate from Kusun Ensemble and George Penn from True Sound for an uplifiting set. The Steppin Out set was followed by a blowout afterparty with the Booty Battalion and True Sound at Baylee's Cafe. We were joined by The African Show Boys for a slamming and floor shaking performance, including some fire-eating by on the Boys. Thanks to all that came and supported this wonderful cultural affair.

WHAT'S YOU BEEN DOING??? (an overview of March 2003)

So, I've been pretty slack with the site lately, but here's an overview of what I've been doing throughout March:
1. Played with The Motet for a week or so in Colorado (2/27-3/7/03)
2. Played pre-Theory of Everything jam (3/10/03)in Boulder, CO at the new Southern Sun with Tye North (bass)/Ross Martin (guitar)/Christian Teal(drums)
3. Played jam at Matt Murphy's in Boston with Jeff Scott of Miracle Orchestra/Club D'elf, straight off the plane from CO
4. Played some random latin jazz jam at Wally's in Boston with some bad ass Cuban drummer named Maylo(sp?)
5. Played with Los Platanos in Norwalk, CT on Fri 3/21/03
6. Played with Nicole Nelson Band in Boston on Sat 3/22/03
So, that's what I did I think. It's all such a blur, but thanks to all of those musicians for letting me jam with y'all.
